Oʻahu is a tiny island with a giant personality. Within an hour’s drive you can stand among desert botanicals, dramatic lava cliffs, emerald mountains, or soft white sand beaches. The secret is not just where you shoot, but when you shoot.
After photographing weddings, elopements, proposals, families, maternity sessions, and seniors across the island, these are our absolute favorite Oʻahu locations and when they truly shine.
1. Koko Crater Botanical Garden
Drive: ~25 minutes from Waikiki
Best time: Early morning or late afternoon
If you want something different from the typical beach look, this is it. Inside the crater you’ll find cactus gardens, winding dirt paths, tall plumeria trees, and mountain views rising around you.
Morning light is soft and flattering, while late afternoon adds warmth and dimension to the plants and textures. It feels earthy, artistic, and slightly editorial.
Perfect for seniors, couples, maternity sessions, and even intimate elopement portraits.
2. Halona Beach Cove
Drive: ~30 minutes from Waikiki
Best time: Early morning
This small cove tucked between lava rock cliffs feels cinematic. There’s a natural cave, turquoise water, and dramatic rock formations that frame couples beautifully.
Because it’s compact, it gets busy quickly. Sunrise keeps it peaceful and golden.
Ideal for senior, elopement and romantic couples sessions.
3. Makapuʻu Lookout & Beach Park
Drive: ~30 minutes from Waikiki

Here you get lava rock textures, sweeping coastline views, greenery, and mountain backdrops all in one area. The early light makes the ocean glow bright blue and keeps shadows soft.
A great location for adventurous couples and families.
4. Kualoa Regional Park (Kaneohe)
Drive: ~45 minutes from Waikiki
Best time: Between sunrise to 10am
Massive green mountains rise directly behind the beach, creating one of the most iconic backdrops on Oʻahu. Morning light wraps softly across the shoreline before crowds arrive.
One of our favorite spots for maternity sessions, family portraits, and elopements.
5. Kaaʻawa Beach Park

7. Lanikai Beach
